Background and Passion for Civil Justice

The following is excerpted from an interview with John Yannone, a partner at Price Benowitz LLP who handles personal injury and medical malpractice cases.

What Is Your Main Area of Practice?

John Yannone: Personal injury and medical malpractice. My personal injury cases range from car accidents to slip and falls to workers’ compensation, or any kind of general personal injury. Medical malpractice is specifically medical negligence and product liability, which involves product defects. Then there are other general torts including sexual assault and sexual abuse, which fall under the category of intentional torts, but there are usually some elements beyond the perpetrator of the assault. In many instances there is an institution involved, so that aspect of it becomes a negligence action.

Why Did You Choose Personal Injury Law?

John Yannone: I’ve always been on the civil side in terms of bringing actions to protect the victims of different negligent acts; it’s something that I gravitated towards. I like to advocate for those who don’t have a voice, and that’s why I have a particular affinity for sexual assault and abuse cases, because it’s usually against minors, who are the most vulnerable and who really need protection.

It’s about helping others and advocating for those who don’t have a voice. All cases that I handle typically involve large insurance companies and institutions versus the individual. For 25 years, I’ve fought against insurance companies who aren’t looking out for those who are really injured, but they’re looking out for their shareholders and trying to save their company money so that they can pay their shareholders’ dividends and have good value on their stocks instead of doing what’s good, proper, and right for those who have been victimized by their insurance.
