Low-T Testosterone Therapy Recalls

A growing body of research shows that testosterone treatments may cause serious and debilitating side effects in many unsuspecting patients. Dangerous, even tragic consequences such as heart attack, stroke, diminished liver function, congestive heart failure, and even death are just some of the serious problems that have been reported in several recent medical studies.

These peer-reviewed studies showed that men who casually underwent testosterone therapies, meaning they did not have a thorough medical evaluation to determine if they were at an increased risk for complications, could increase their chances of heart attack and other cardiovascular issues.

Testosterone replacement therapy was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat conditions associated with a deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone, primacy hypogonadism and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

On January 31, 2014, the FDA released a warning for Low-T therapy patients of the potential risk of testosterone therapy. The agency has indicated it plans to conduct further investigation of the testosterone supplements AndroGel, Testim, Androderm, Axiron, Fortesta, and Bio-T-Gel.

The FDA said its primary focus is, “the risk of stroke, heart attack and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone products.” Some companies that manufacture testosterone treatments aggressively market their drug to the general public as a cure for low testosterone levels for all men.

Advertising campaigns have made various claims about the potential restorative powers of these testosterone products, from improving memory loss to eradicating erectile dysfunction.

However, critics of the products say the manufacturers have failed to stress the importance of a thorough medical examination before embarking on any Low-T treatment regimen.

Research and Risks of Low-T Therapy

For men who suffer significantly Low-T levels, many of these products have been enthusiastically received. However, research published in 2013 by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) raised serious questions about just how safe testosterone therapy really is.

The results concluded that men with prior heart troubles who took testosterone supplements experienced higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. The research involved 8,709 men over age 60 who participated in the double-blind study. Of the 1,223 patients taking testosterone treatments, 23 had heart attacks, 33 suffered strokes, and 67 of the participants died during the 18 month study.

At the Boston University School of Medicine, a 2010 study of testosterone in senior men was reportedly halted because patients taking the hormone were five times more likely to suffer a serious heart event, including congestive heart failure.

And according to another study published by the scientific journal PLOS One, testosterone therapy doubled the risk of heart attacks in men over 65, and nearly tripled the risk of a heart attack in even younger patients with a known history of heart disease.

A Skilled Law Firm Can Help

A Feb. 5, 2014 Bloomberg News report noted that five men have filed suits alleging AndroGel’s manufacturers – Abbot Laboratories and AbbVie Inc., were responsible for their heart attacks or strokes. So far, no verdict has been reached. Legal analysts, however, predict more of these cases are on the horizon.

Men who suffered injury after taking Androgel or other testosterone treatments, or surviving family members of a victim of wrongful death, may all be entitled to monetary awards from these manufacturers. Damages include the soaring cost of medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, emotional distress and even loss of consortium for the victim’s spouse.
